In earlier times, going to a foreign country would probably be considered as a negative situation in life. Leaving the homeland, the arduous travel, the struggle to settle yourself in the new environment, would probably be discomfort during the pre-globalization / pre-modern times. But in todays times, considering the global nature of work culture and also the fact that the general feeling is that the West is a place with greener pastures (for the material world)
One of the things commonly asked nowadays is – Will a person settle in a foreign country?
For foreign settlements I have considered the following areas to be looked at,
- 4th house lord and karak (home, homeland)
- 12th house lord and Karak (foreign land, away from home)
- 9th house lord and Karak
- 1st house lord and karak (4th from karmasthan)
Also , I have done two types of analysis – absolute and relative
- Absolute – placement of lord or Karak in any house
- Relative – placement of lord or Karak from the house of discussion. For example, 4th lord is placed 6th from itself (4th house)
Here are my findings
- 12th house plays the biggest role in foreign settlement. Lord should be strong or helpful. Plus benefics in 12th house surely add to the equation.
- 4th house should be badly afflicted in some way. Mainly lord of 4th house and Karak. But it could also be ketu in 4th, Saturn and Mars in 4th. Basically 4th house affliction dissociates a person from home, homeland
- Karak of 12th house defines whether a person will enjoy their life in foreign land – both from a material and mental point of view. For e.g A person may be settled in US but not be happy if the Karak is in a weak position
- 9th house is the secondary support to the 12th house. Even if the 12th is neutral, if the 9th is very positive, it takes the person to foreign land.
- 1st house along with 4th house if afflicted, also signifies moving away from home (1st house is 4th from 10th which is karmasthan)
So the Sutra could be –
IF 12TH HOUSE/LORD/KARAK IS STRONG AND 4TH HOUSE/LORD/KARAK IS AFFLICTED, A PERSON MOVES AWAY FROM MOTHERLAND AND LIVES IN FOREIGN LAND
Both conditions have to be met for the displacement to happen. Its a matter of give and take. The motherland gives and the foregin land takes. The 1st house afflicted will be an additional push towards foreign settlement. The 9th house positive also will be an additional push for foreign settlement.
In case both 4th and 12th are strong, a person will live in foreign land but eventually return back to their motherland (I am a good example. I lived in US for 13 years and returned back to settle down in India)
